Benefits of Zone 2 Training for Endurance Athletes
Is it time to drop the ego, stop searching for kudos on Strava and train more effectively?
Yes I’m talking zone 2. The often mysterious zone that eludes us and nobody likes.
It’s either too slow (it isn’t) or you run in Z3 then post it as a Z2 run.
Sometimes it’s neither fun nor pretty but basing the majority of your training here will offer the most benefit.
Training in Z2 helps prevent injury, fact. This is not just because you aren’t pushing as much, it’s because it allows you to focus on good form.
Z2 primarily focuses on building a strong aerobic base, improving your body’s ability to utilise fat as fuel, enhancing endurance and allows high training volume due to its low intensity.
Yes we need sessions focusing on zones 3,4&5, particular for more experienced athletes, but keep the majority of your work in Z2 and your future you will thank you for it one day.
